Kids Serving Kids

 “Driving Out Hunger”

IN HONOR OF

NATIONAL HUNGER AND HOMELESSNESS

AWARENESS WEEK

November 12th – 20th, 2011

SEE HIGHLIGHTS:

Kids Serving Kids was started by a ten year old, 5th grade student named Samara Wilson.  For the past two years Samara and one of her friends had many discussions about doing something to help children less fortunate than themselves.  During the summer of 2011, after reading an article about the increase of hungry homeless children, Samara asked her mother if she could do a project to help homeless children in the Philadelphia area.  Samara has been volunteering with the Association since she was 4 years old.  Below is her statement of inspiration:

"I am inspired because I am blessed to have great role models in my life.  First my grand-aunt has done so much to help people especially children.  I only knew her for 3 years because she died, but she told me many amazing stories. I admire her. When my grand-uncle held the first Christmas Party for poor children in Philadelphia, almost 4,000 children showed up.  Somehow he found toys for all of those children, but I do not know how he did it, but that was amazing. All my life, I watched my mom help others, giving of herself unselfishly and always having me help too..I am thankful for my family that helps my mom take care of me.  Now I want to make a difference in the lives of other children because there is hope."

In 2010, 17.2 million households, 14.5 percent of households (approximately one in seven), were food insecure, the highest number ever recorded in the United States 1,2 (Coleman-Jensen 2011, p. v.)
